Breast Reduction Operation Details
PRE-OPERATIVE
Before Your Breast Reduction surgery;
- Smoking - Essential to stop smoking at least 3 weeks before your Breast Reduction surgery and until wounds are fully healed or at least 2 weeks after.
- Previous surgery - Previous breast surgery or scars may alter the Breast Reduction surgery.
- Drugs - Avoid aspirin/ibuprofen type analgesics for 3 weeks before and after your Breast Reduction surgery. - Stop Vit. E one (1) week before surgery.
OPERATION
Your Breast Reduction Surgery- Reduction Mammoplasty;
- Scars - Depends on Breast size and Breast shape but at the time of your Breast Reduction Surgery, will have some part of scar around nipple,down to crease under breasts then along crease.
- Nipple - Remains attached to breast tissue in all types of Breast Reduction surgery except in Breast Reduction in Gigantomastia - Excessively large Breast - when a free nipple graft technique may de recommended.
- Sutures - Dissolving,buried are used in your Breast Reduction Surgery so that no sutures need to be removed.
- Drains - Are commonly used to remove any blood or fluid that may accumulate in the breast and are removed before discharge from hospital following Breast Reduction Surgery.
- Dressing - Waterproof Supportive dressings for 10 – 14 days and Bra after your Breast Reduction Surgery. You are able to shower daily when you are discharged / return home!
POST-OPERATIVE
After Your Breast Reduction Surgery- Reduction Mammoplasty;
- Following your Breast Reduction Surgery a Non under-wired,soft,support bra is to be worn day and night for 6 weeks. (We would like you to purchase x 2 Berlie Shock absorber; style - B102. The sizes of these bras will be discussed with you at consultation,and further advice will be given to you by one of our nurses when you book your procedure).
- Exercise - Avoid vigorous exercise for 6 weeks following your Breast Reduction Surgery - Reduction Mammoplasty.
- Care of scars - Apply Micropore tape (1 inch) along scars for 3 months after your Breast Reduction Surgery, to prevent stretching and accelerate scar softening. Vit. E creams may be used after this period.
POTENTIAL PROBLEMS
Following Your Breast Reduction Surgery- Reduction Mammoplasty;
- Pain - Mild to moderate discomfort only is expected following your Breast Reduction- Reduction Mammoplasty Surgery. Avoid aspirin/ibuprofen type analgesics which may increase bruising.
- Bruising - Common, may last for 2 to 3 weeks after Breast Reduction Surgery.
- Wound - Occasionally mild infection.
- Rarely, delayed healing or skin loss requiring a period of dressings.
- Very rarely, serious infection or haematoma (blood collection) requiring drainage after Breast Reduction, which once dealt with effectively, does not affect the results of Breast Reduction surgery.
- Numbness - Skin and nipple sensation is reduced after Breast Reduction Surgery, but usually returns after 6 to 12 weeks.
- Asymmetry - Uncommon, but may require minor adjustment once fully healed following Breast Reduction Surgery.
