Treatment of Hyperhidrosis with BOTOX - VISTABEL - DYSPORT
- Sweatox
INTRODUCTION
- BOTOX - VISTABEL - DYSPORT is a purified preparation of botulinum toxin TypeA,obtained from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating above the physiologically required level the body needs to control the temperature. This can be either focal, affecting discrete areas such as the under arms, palms, forehead or feet or generalised affecting the whole body, usually caused by hyperthyroidism, diabetes or infections.
USE
- Botulinum Toxin BOTOX - Dysport can be used to treat Focal Hyperhidrosis; excessive sweating,in the under arms, forehead,or palms.
ACTION
- Botulinum Toxin blocks the actions of the nerves that supply the sweat glands in the skin. New nerve endings grow to supply the sweat glands over a period of 6 – 12 weeks. This means that the effect of Botulinum Toxin is temporary and the effect gradually wears off after 4 – 6 months. The onset of action is 3 to 5 days after injection and the reduction in sweating can last up to 6 months. Repeat injections may be required to reduce sweating to the desired level.
TREATMENT
- Clinic procedure. Fine needle injections of BOTOX or Dysport into the areas to be treated. Usually multiple injections of 0.01 to 0.02ml of Botulinum Toxin is required. Treatment can take about 30 minutes for the under arms. Topical local anaesthetic cream can be applied 45 minutes before treatment to reduce the pain of the injections. Cooling with ice packs also reduces the discomfort.
