During liposuction and fat grafting, adipose tissue, or fat cells, are taken from the body and either disposed of or grafted back into a different area of the body to enhance volume and ‘sculpt’ to create a more ideal shape. The ‘Lipoaspirate’, the fat harvested, is made up of different cells, the stroma, which includes stem cells (adipose derived stem cells or ADSC’s), growth factors, progenitor cells, T cells, B cells and macrophages. This means that it is a fluid rich in beneficial factors for growth, regeneration and healing.

Extracting a therapeutic concentration of these factors, a stroma-vascular fraction (SVF) can be achieved by centrifuging the extract. However, up until now, extracting only the precise layer of concentrated nuclear cells was difficult without using an enzyme to separate the layers. A lot of research has been carried out to determine the best ways of extraction and centrifuging of the adipose extract. Microaire have developed StromaCell, a technology to bypass this problem with a new design of centrifuge which prepares the concentrated cells ready for re-injection. The advantage is that it is quick and autologous – there is no risk of rejection of the cells as they are simply a concentration of the patients’ own cells.

I have been working closely with the team at Microaire, to create a treatment protocol for use in buttock enhancement. Fat can be harvested from another part of the body and then used to create fuller buttocks by re-injection into the buttock area. Using the StromaCell techniques, we can enhance the results and increase the effect of the fat grafting, stimulating the formation of a biomaterial scaffold to give structure to the graft and increase the sculpted effect of the grafting.

We will be the first in the UK who will be able to offer Stroma Cell enhanced Fat Grafting for buttock enhancement within our Brazilian Buttock Lift procedure.
